What is the musical all about?
Fiddler on the Roof was originally entitled Tevye. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem which he wrote in Yiddish and published in 1894. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter’s choice of husband moves progressively further away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village. The Show
I didn’t expect to like it, but I did! In fact, I wouldn’t even bother to watch it if it hadn’t been for the free tickets (yay at last). But it’s a classic and I haven’t seen it… and I was absolutely stressed that night because of the following day’s hectic events: my report, make-up class and my org’s concert so I was craving for a much needed break. I can’t really say anything negative about it because it really is a good show. I initially thought it was outdated but luckily I was wrong. The themes are very much relevant today. It really must be difficult for parents to accept the reality that sooner or later, their son or daughter will eventually start a new life without them. Hoho.
The songs are really memorable. Most of the songs have been spoofed dozens of times so I’m familiar with quite a few of them even if don’t know a thing about the musical. One thing though, was the dance with the bottle on their heads supposed to be funny? Or was it the fault of Spamalot? Hehe Spamalot totally ruined the scene for us. All we could picture was Sir Robin singing/dancing to “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway”. We were actually looking forward to that scene. And Tevye’s dream was really cool too. I did not expect that. It seemed out of place at first but oh well, I loved the song and the glowing thingie was creepy and fun. I also loved Tevye’s monologues.
Our dad was singing along the entire time (haha) because he said he has seen it 3 or 4 times. Apparently, this has been like the nth production of Fiddler on the Roof.
Directed by Baby Barredo and Robbie Guevara.
