Spamalot

“Comedy’s joyous, a constant delight! Dramas annoy us and ruin our night!”
— Carmen Ghia

Spamalot Playbill and ticket
Friday evening show, May 4, 2007 at the Shubert Theater
Starring Jonathan Hadary, Marin Mazzie, Christopher Sieber
Martin Moran, Tom Deckman, Rick Holmes, Jeffrey Kuhn…

Ok, that wasn’t exactly from Spamalot but I just wanted to emphasize on the experience of watching a musical comedy compared to heavy musical dramas. I love musicals that leave you with a warm, fuzzy and cozy feeling inside… like Spamalot! Although many of the lyrics were silly and made very little sense to me (I have not seen any episode of Monty Python or any of the movies), I had a fantastic time watching Spamalot. The following are mostly comments on the performers..

My sisters and I were used to listening to the original cast so comparing them with the actual performers was inevitable. Most of the lead cast were replacements but it was kinda cool that Jonathan Hadary sounded and looked like Tim Curry. Marin Mazzie… weeell, we were bound to compare her to Sara Ramirez but she was (for lack of a better word) okay. Slightly disappointing but still okay. The rest of the replacement cast were okay too, I’ve only seen Hank Azaria on bootlegs of Spamalot, but Rick Holmes was great for the role as well.

But omg Christopher Sieber was still playing Sir Galahad!!!! He has always been my favorite in the cast recording and to see him perform “The Song That Goes Like This” was one of the best things in the show. The second one was Tom Deckman as Not Dead Fred and Prince Herbert (and his other roles)!!! Sooo cute and sooo funny. Wish I could’ve seen Christian Borle too, but I think Tom Deckman was equally fabulous. Martin Moran for Sir Robin..I actually can’t remember his performance anymore (but I was absolutely sure I enjoyed his “You Won’t Succeed in Broadway” number!) because I kept picturing David Hyde Pierce in the role.

Even if there were jokes/scenes that seemed to drag on forever and ever (the weird rabbit, the annoying French guards, some parts of the Knights of Ni, some parts in Prince Herbert’s chamber with the intoxicated and the stupid guards…), I loved it. To compare both of the shows we watched, Spamalot is funnier than Curtains but Curtains had much better songs (with the exception of the Robbin Hood songs. Ick).

My favorite numbers/songs from the performance was “I Am Not Dead Yet”, “The Song That Goes Like This”, “All for One”, “Find Your Grail”, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway” and “Where Are You/Here Are You/His Name is Lancelot”. A lot, right? :D
